Pupils pick up prizes
Academy honours
It’s fair to say it has been a tough year for school pupils across Monklands with Covid-19 playing havoc with their work, timetables and out of class friendships.
But Airdrie Academy was determined to ensure its youngsters ended 2020 on a high note by honouring the sensational success they have enjoyed over the past school session.
Although coronavirus led to the school’s traditional senior prizegiving ceremony being cancelled, the fourth to sixth-year pupils were still given their well deserved moments in the spotlight by individually receiving awards recognising their very hard work and dedication during this “most unusual and challenging of years”.
Top honours went to school dux
Eilidh Cowan and proxime accessit Aela Harries who were both thrilled with their prestigious accolades.
But the school was quick to pay tribute to every pupil for their “fantastic commitment” and have shared their achievements during the 2019/ 20 session with the Advertiser.
Students’ success in their National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher subjects was hugely impressive – with the promise of even more to come in the future.
A school spokesperson said: “Everyone at Airdrie Academy is proud to showcase the talents of our senior pupils.
“Although the traditional prizegiving ceremony was cancelled this year, the school was determined that the pupils’ academic achievements and excellence would be recognised and celebrated for their hard work and fantastic commitment throughout session 2019/20.
“Aside from the impressive list of prizewinners, the school had the pleasure of announcing that Eilidh Cowan and Aela Harries have received the dux and proxime accessit award accolades respectively.
“This is an outstanding achievement for Eilidh and Aela and they share their accolades with an impressive list of alumni.
“We wish them and all of their fellow pupils all the very best for continued success going forward.
“Hopefully next year we will be able to hold our senior prizegiving ceremony together again.
“But this was a fitting way to honour our students in this most unusual and challenging of years.
“Congratulations to all of our senior pupils.”
