Car parks join electric revolution
Electric vehicle charging points are now live at two Monklands car parks as part of a “pioneering”£5.3 million project, with five more to follow in the new year.
The new facilities at King Street in Coatbridge and Drumgelloch railway station are among 12 which have been installed at locations across Lanarkshire as part of Project Pace, giving motorists easy access to required power supplies.
The new hubs have so far been used more than 4500 times to provide 82 megawatt hours of energy fuelling 300,000 miles of travel – which experts say has saved 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions compared to petrol and diesel vehicle use.
Further facilities at the Time Capsule and Drumpellier Park in Coatbridge, at Hallcraig Street and Cairnhill Road car parks in Airdrie, and at the Pivot centre in Moodiesburn will go live early in the new year, with the project due to provide a total of 180 new charging points at 40 locations by April.
Project Pace – a partnership between SP Energy Networks, the Scottish Government, Transport Scotland and North and South Lanarkshire councils – will treble the county’s electric vehicle charging capacity.
Scott Mathieson of SP Energy Networks said:“the benefits of Project Pace are already clear as we reach the halfway point.
“It’s a blueprint for collaborative working towards the roll out of electric vehicle charging across the country, and we’re proud to be leading the way when it comes to meeting both Scottish and UK Government net zero targets.”
