Support vulnerable people

- IAN BUNTING

A Monklands care company is asking residents to spread “a little kindness” to vulnerable people they know in their communities in the New Year.

Mears Supported Living has highlighted how some will “be feeling lonely at this time, or socially isolated, and as area restrictions tighten, this may be heightened”.

The company provides supported living services to 82 people who need help in their own homes.

Local manager Anne-marie Kelly said: “We work closely with the local authorities in each area.

“Support workers have been able to bring a quality of life to someone who is severely restricted on their own.”

As it wasn’t possible to hold their annual Christmas party due to Covid-19, the Mears team instead gave back to the community and gifted a basket of goods to residents on behalf of all the staff and service users.

Anne- Marie said: “We greatly missed not being able to host our usual party, which can be the highlight of the year for some vulnerable people.

“But I want to thank each and every one of my care team members who have gone above and beyond in this year of crisis to ensure those we care for remain safe and healthy during these challenging times.

“I cannot thank them enough for following guidelines to ensure the wellbeing of all of those people in our care.”

Mears has also given tips on how people can bring some much needed cheer to their community.

A spokesperson for the compnay said: “Could you pick up the phone and call someone you know is on their own, to give them some social contact?

“You could offer to fetch shopping, within the social distancing guidelines, or post letters, or fetch prescriptions.

“Just starting a conversation in the street, a smile and saying hello over the garden gate or through a window can make an enormous difference to someone who is feeling a bit out of sorts during all the challenges the coronavirus pandemic has thrown up for our society.

“Any of us could send good wishes and bring some cheer.”
