Roy will step up to the plate on injury return

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Ally Roy admits he’s been a frustrated patient after months of rehabilitation from a broken wrist – and will set off airport metal detectors when he next goes on holiday.

The Airdrie striker had a metal plate inserted into his wrist after breaking it in an awkward fall during a 2-0 Betfred Cup defeat back in October, and was told he would be out for 12 weeks.

Roy, 23, says it has been tough having to watch from the sidelines since then, but he was happy to pay that small price which helped ensure he returned to action fully fit in Saturday’s 4-2 victory against Clyde.

Roy said: “At the back of the pitch at Airdrie, the bit behind the goal goes down a wee hill, I was just on the tip of that when I landed on it.

“I heard it snap and I knew straight away that it was gubbed, and it was a dislocated and broken wrist, so I had to get an operation on it.

“They’ve put a plate in it now, so that will be me when I go on holiday, setting off the metal detector ‘beep, beep beep’ and that’s murder, but I suppose anything to make it stronger.

“It has been very frustrating, because I’ve been limited in what I can do – after it happened I couldn’t eat my dinner or anything like that, so it wasn’t ideal.”

The good news for Diamonds fans is the former Hearts man is back and a 90th minute cameo at Broadwood, replacing Kyle Connell, has him back in the side before the year is out.

He had hoped to be back sooner and he had already fallen foul of head physio John Mcmenemy – even if director of football Stuart Millar was encouraging him to hurry back for weeks.

Ally added: “It’s great just to be able to put a pair of foots on my feet again, and just try to get back to what my normal routine would be of working every day.

“I had been nagging the physios and

Stuart Millar has been nagging me, trying to get me back earlier, but they knew best and didn’t want to rush me back too early.

“What if I was to have a fall and just go back to square one again and I need to wait another 12 weeks?

“Because of the operation and because it was such a bad break, I needed to make sure it was fully strong before getting back in.

“I started gradually doing a bit and ended up with a ball at my feet, doing a couple of skills and stuff, and got into trouble because it was one of the icy days and they didn’t want me falling on it!”
