Captain wants reaction to ‘embarrassment’
Albion Rovers skipper Aron Lynas admits they’ve let everybody down after an ‘embarrassing’ Scottish Cup first round exit to Buckie Thistle.
But he insists they are more than capable of bouncing back by pulling off a shock of their own and downing leaders Queen’s Park when they return to League Two duty this weekend.
Rovers had a cup horror show as Highland League Buckie blew them away at Cliftonhill with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
It could easily have been a heavier defeat and Lynas is calling for a big reaction when they host the Spiders.
He said: “Personally it was embarrassing and I’m sure all the boys were embarrassed.
“We said right from the start, do not underestimate them, Buckie will be a side looking to prove a point – which they did.
“We knew they would be a strong physical team and they wouldn’t make things easy for us, but it was a game we knew we should have won.
“We had the belief we’d win, get into the next round and kick on for the league.
“So it was really hard to take. Even although we were 2- 0 down at half-time, we still felt we could go and win the game. We know we have the quality in the team to do it.
“It was hugely disappointing and we’ve let everyone down.
“It’s just a matter of putting that game behind us, getting a massive reaction on Saturday, getting three points and building our way back up that table.”
After a nightmare end to 2020, Rovers will look to start the new year right at home to the Spiders. Lynas knows the task awaiting his side, with Queen’s Park unbeaten this season and five points clear at the top of the table.
But he insists ninth-place Rovers, who shocked second place Elgin earlier this month, have what it takes.
“Saturday against Queen’s Park is going to be a hard game, but we still believe that we can do well,” said Lynas.
“They are a full-time team with some good players in that squad, but we believe we can win it. We believe we can beat anybody in this league. We need to go out there, prove everybody wrong and show we are a good team.”
