Work starts on tower block reface
Renovation work is being carried out at four Coatbridge tower blocks as part of North Lanarkshire’s reprovision and refurbishment programme.
The projects at Blairgrove, Glen, Merryston and Millbrae Courts include installing new windows, lighting and cladding, plus putting in charging points for mobility and electric vehicles.
Sprinkler systems are being installed in individual flats and new fire doors put in place, while entrance areas are being upgraded and communal areas redecorated.
External work is well under way with scaffolding in place outside the blocks, with the work being carried out by Engie Regeneration on behalf of the council.
Housing convener Heather Brannan-mcvey said:“residents will enjoy a more modern look to the towers and enhanced safety measures and improved amenities.
“Elements of these works were previously put on hold due to coronavirus restrictions, but we are pleased to see that significant progress is now being made to improve the interiors and exteriors of these flats, and also common spaces and surrounding areas.
“As part of our ambitious long-term tower re-provisioning programme, we made the commitment to continue investing in our existing stock.”
Demolition has also now begun at Burnside Court block in Coatbridge, with internal works currently being carried out ahead of knocking down the eight-storey block in the months ahead.
It is included in the first phase of the North Lanarkshire-wide programme to knock down all of its high-rise tower blocks over the next two decades, which has already seen the demolition of the three towers at Holehills in Airdrie, while Coatbridge landmarks Jackson and Dunbeth Courts and High Coats are scheduled to be knocked down in 2023.
