Airdrie in transfer window talks with Celtic to keep hold of loan midfielder Mcinroy

- BEN BANKS

Airdrie manager Ian Murray says contact has been made with Celtic over bringing Kerr Mcinroy back to the club during the winter transfer window.

The midfielder has been an ever-present in the Diamonds midfield since arriving on loan from the Hoops in October.

Mcinroy has previously stated that he doesn’t see his future at Celtic.

His deal at Parkhead is set to expire in May, and a one-year extension clause isn’t likely to be activated by Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou (below).

Murray only signed him on loan until January and the midfielder scored a sensational goal in last month’s 3-1

League One win over

Alloa, before following it up with a winner against Queen’s

Park.

Easton’s winning strike during Sunday’s 1-0 win against Dumbarton and the Airdrie boss says Mcinroy is one he’d like to keep.

He explained: “Kerr’s goal was incredible and I don’t think any goalkeeper in the land would have saved that.

“Kerr has been great and since his first game, he’s been superb.

“He’s such a lovely guy. He’s been great with the boys and he’s a very good player.

“We have been fortunate but I would like to think we have helped him.

“We’ve made our intentions clear to Celtic and Kerr that we would like to keep him.

“But he’s not our player. It has to work for Celtic, for Kerr and for us. “The most important thing is he’s playing football.

“He might be in no man’s land a wee bit but he’s enjoying his football. He’s been great. His goal and performance against Alloa showed how good a player he is.”

Murray wants to strengthen his squad in January with at least two additions. While Covid has proven problematic for

clubs in recent weeks - Airdrie’s game with Queen’s Park last month postponed due to virus issues - Murray says it won’t impact transfers.

He added: “We have to be mindful that Covid is going around and things can change in one day. We have seen a lot of depleted squads over the last 10 days and I don’t anticipate it getting better.

“I’m not sure if we will need to carry a bigger squad in January but we will look to strengthen, like every team. We do have scope to do that.

“It was always our intention to strengthen at the halfway stage and we maybe need to do that as we have picked up injuries recently.

“We’ve been working on it for the last couple of months, but sometimes, players are under contract or a manager changes. We want at least two players.”

Mcinroy has enjoyed his time with the Diamonds but admits he doesn’t know what the future holds beyond this week, never mind the end of the season. He said: “I’m not sure what the rest of the month looks like. I need to have a couple of meetings this week. It is more exciting than it being something I am worrying

about.”
