Plant a tree for Queen’s Jubilee

-

Lanarkshire is all set to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year as the county prepares to embark on a unique Ukwide tree planning initiative.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is inviting people from all over the area to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’.

Everyone from individuals to uniformed youth organisations, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates have been encouraged to plant trees from October 2021 – when the tree planting season began – through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the nation, which will benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, the QGC will dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

Planing is already well under way to create a wood of some 2000 native trees at Dechmont by Cambuslang – just one of Lanarkshire’s initiatives to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Working with Lowland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, who manage the training ground at Dechmont on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, Her Majesty’s Lord-lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Haughey CBE, is leading Lanarkshire’s plans to mark the Queen’s 70 years of leadership and service to the nation by planting this wood in the spring of 2022.

Lady Haughey said: “The Lanarkshire Lieutenancy is proud to support the QGC and will be working with both North and South Lanarkshire Councils to ensure the success of the campaign in our area.”

Further information on how the public can engage in the campaign is available from the

QGC website at www.queensgreencanopy.org.

If any organisation wishes a member of the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy to be present at a tree planting ceremony please email the Lieutenancy Office at lord.lieutenant@northlan.gov.uk and they will do their best to have a representative attend.
