Students secure place in capital contest final
Five apprentices from New College Lanarkshire (NCL) have been announced as finalists in a fire and security skills competition in London.
They are competing at the IFSEC and FIREX Engineers of Tomorrow challenge at the English capital’s EXCEL arena from yesterday until tomorrow.
Calum Sutherland, Conor Peddie, William Graham and Lewis Kinnear will compete in a live installation challenge in electronic security systems, while Ryan Cherrie will take on a fire alarm systems challenge.
All five are currently undertaking a modern apprenticeship in electronic fire and security systems and combine their studies at the college’s state-of-the-art securities hub at its Kirkintilloch campus with on-thejob training.
The quality quintet will be among 36 finalists selected as the next generation of engineering talent showcasing their skills to thousands of industry professionals each day.
John Mccusker, head of construction trades and technology at New College Lanarkshire, told the
Advertiser : “Congratulations to the five students on reaching this stage of the competition and a very sincere thank you to the employers and staff involved in the preparation and support of this event.
“We wish you all the best for the next stage in showcasing your talents.”
The winners of Engineers of Tomorrow will proceed to the national finals of the esteemed Worldskills UK (WSUK) event in November.
For the first time this year, both the electronic security and the fire alarm competitions will be represented at WSUK.
The Engineers of Tomorrow competition is a part of the IFSEC International 2022 security industry conference, which is being held for the first time since 2019.
Staff from NCL’S electronic fire and security systems team recently took part in the Security Twenty 22 conference and exhibition at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel to find out about the latest technologies within the industry.
