Paranormal activity at Kirk o’shotts

- MICHAEL PRINGLE

Paranormal investigators have been checking for ghostly goings-on at a Monklands church.

Sleuths from Scottish Paranormal have revealed that they have been collecting audio recordings and photographs at Kirk o’ Shotts church.

They are hoping to unravel several reported mysterious events said to have taken place over the years, including a spooky local tale of the “Grey Lady”.

The church near Salsburgh is still in operation with parishioners still enjoying worship on Sunday mornings.

It is also known as Shotts Kirk or the M8 church, due to its close proximity to the motorway.

The B-listed building is often illuminated at night and can be seen by motorists.

The first church recorded to have been situated there, St Catherine’s Chapel, was built in 1450.

The present church building was opened in 1821 but the graveyard of the church contains headstones which date back to the early 1600s and is alleged to be haunted, with various figures, and strange noises previously captured on audio recordings.

Stories associated with the area include that of a woman driver who physically hit someone with her car, but got out of her vehicle to find absolutely nothing. The figure had supposedly “vanished into thin air”.

A number of other people, who have mainly been on foot, have also reported a mysterious and ghostly “Grey Lady”.

Haunted Scotland is the Facebook page of Scottish Paranormal.the non-profit organisation provides research, history, local knowledge tours and online presentations of their work – which has featured on popular television shows such as Most Haunted and My House is Haunted.

They recently revealed that they had visited the church near Shotts, saying on Facebook: “The longrunning ghost tales of ‘The Grey Lady’ haunting the graveyard and surrounding woods are known to both locals and visitors alike. #spooky

“The latest visit to the location was Saturday, April 16, 2022, to gather audio and photographs. Our audio is under analysis! #Paranormalresearch”.
