Memories group is back

-

A popular sporting reminiscence group has made a long-awaited return to in-person monthly meetings and is inviting both new faces and existing members to share their experiences.

Football Memories is run by Airdrie-based organisation Diamonds in the Community, allowing people living with memory issues such as dementia as well as those who are older or living in isolation to come together and share their memories of the beautiful game.

The group’s previous programme was halted by the Covid pandemic – but has resumed at a new venue, with organisers also planning to expand their activities.

People can relive stories of their favourite stars and matches from previous years with fellow fans by looking at photos, game footage and memorabilia including programmes.

All are welcome to attend the free sessions, which even include a half-time pie and Bovril in keeping with the matchday experience.

The group meets at Airdrie working men’s club on Broomknoll Street, from 11.30am to 1pm on the first Friday of each month; sessions are free but donations are welcome.

Diamonds in the Community’s football memories group is part of a reminiscence project launched six years ago by Alzheimer Scotland and the Scottish Football Museum.

The Airdrie sessions first started four years ago and have even seen former Broomfield players join to share their stories; and when the coronavirus lockdown halted the regular meetings, volunteers stayed in touch with their members in care homes and devised online activities.
