TARGET SET FOR GABBY

Airdrie striker wants to be top goalscorer

- TAYLOR MURRAY

Airdrie striker Gabby Mcgill bagged a double as he helped his side win the NL Cup at Broadwood, and set his sights on being League One’s top scorer.

The 21-year-old Englishman is looking ahead to the season with optimism, and wants to fire Airdrie up the league and himself up the scoring charts.

Mcgill netted twice as Airdrie beat Stirling Albion 3-0 in their semi-final on Saturday, and he is looking forward to clashing with Cowdenbeath in the Premier Sports Cup group stages this weekend.

He said: “I don’t stick to goals targets for the season. I just aim to play the best I can in every game and don’t want the pressure of having to reach a certain target that I’ve set myself.

“That is what I am going to do in every game I play.

“It is only pre-season and we are going to get better and understand each other more.

“But off the back of Saturday, the team is positive and looking forward to the season.”

Mcgill conyinued: “As a striker, you have to be aiming to be top goalscorer in the team and the league.

“You get one goal, two goals and you get into a rich vein of form, which you never know where it will take you throughout the season.”

Former Middlesbrough youth Mcgill was pleased to get on the scoresheet, and reckons Diamonds fans were treated to some good play.

He explained: “Personally, it was good to get two goals and although the first one was better than the second, they both count.

“From the team’s perspective I thought we did really, really well.

“There was a period where we went three minutes with just onetouch passes.”

New boss Rhys Mccabe was pleased with the tournament. He said: “We tried to play some really good football. The players implemented some of the ideas and styles we had been working on in training, which was good to see.

“Everything for me is about training, in terms of standards, intensity, and if you do well in training, for me you deserve your shot.

“We have an idea about a style and a philosophy about how we play and identifying players who fit that profile is key.

“It was a chance for the boys to go and get minutes in their legs.”
