Li­brary Friends recog­nised for ef­forts

THE Friends of Farn­ham Li­brary have re­ceived of­fi­cial recog­ni­tion for their vol­un­teer­ing ef­forts.

The group was joined on one of its reg­u­lar free cof­fee morn­ings last Satur­day by Rose Wil­son, Sur­rey County Coun­cil’s li­brary op­er­a­tions man­ager, who pre­sented them with a cer­tifi­cate in recog­ni­tion of their ‘out­stand­ing sup­port’ for the West Street com­mu­nity fa­cil­ity.

She was joined by the Mayor of Farn­ham, Cllr Jeremy Rick­etts, as well as county coun­cil­lor Pat Frost.

Over the last 18 months the friends have raised £1,500 from the sale of sec­ond-hand chil­dren’s books to go to­wards events and equip­ment that are de­signed to help chil­dren en­gage with read­ing, and have also staged nine chil­dren’s ed­u­ca­tional en­ter­tain­ments dur­ing the school hol­i­days, such as A Child’s Vic­to­rian Christ­mas, The Story of Choco­late at Easter and Vik­ing School.

More than 100 chil­dren were also at­tend­ing the li­brary for a Punch and Judy show, pre­sented by the Friends to pro­mote the chil­dren’s summer read­ing scheme.

“Every­one en­joyed a great party at­mos­phere,” said Claire East, chair­man of the vol­un­teer group.

“We have an ex­cit­ing cal­en­dar of events for the fu­ture and look for­ward to see­ing many of our old friends and some new ones too.”
