11 ADVERTISING FEATURE NEWS & MAIL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2020 TV shows inspired me to ‘blue light’ my career News Fill up with much more than fuel Man was just 15 when he realised he wanted to be a paramedic The Shell petrol station at Tongham Services is open 24 hours a day There can’T be many kids who come home from school, switch on the telly and discover their dream job waiting for them on screen. But for Matondo Manzeninga, 25, from Leeds that is exactly what happened. What you need to knoW... PICTURES: LAURA NIGHTINGALE “I was only 15, but I became really interested in watching medical programmes – not things like Casualty, but serious documentaries,” he explains. “I was fascinated by everything that went on. “Around the same time, I remember starting to notice ambulances racing around town and thinking that it just looked so cool. I realised that I’d like to do something medical when I left college, so I started reading up about paramedics and it really appealed.” Matondo applied to Greenwich University and spent three years studying for a degree in Paramedic Science. The course included a placement with the London Ambulance Service. “Working out what people need is so s at i s f y i ng. TONGHAM SERVICES IS A GREAT NEW PIT STOP By LAURA NIGHTINGALE It cost a hefty £4.20 but I knew it would taste dreamy and I tapped my contactless card as I made my way to the payment window. I also purchased a king prawn mayonnaise sandwich, again for a pricey £4.65, to complete my pit stop lunch. The oat and barley bread was nice and soft, and it was filled generously with plump and juicy prawns – but there was an overpowering flavour of dill. I do not mind dill, but if you are not that keen on herbs it would have ruined your sandwich. I parked up in one of the clean parking bays to enjoy my food and people watch as other motorists made their way around the spacious drive-thru. While Starbucks looked prim and proper, the area around the petrol station still appeared unfinished. The flower beds were full of mud and stones, but I assume shrubs will be planted in time to complete the landscaping. In terms of location, I found accessing and leaving the site easy, safe and convenient. laura.nightingal @la_nightingale TONGHAM Services opened at the A331 (Blackwater Valley Route) roundabout, just before the A31 (Hog’s Back) slip road, earlier this summer. Work began on the petrol station and Starbucks drive-thru just under a year ago, and motorists can now stop there for fuel and a coffee. Inside the services are a number of other food outlets including Sainsbury’s On The Go, Greggs and Subway. Euro Garages Ltd, which has other sites in Woking Road, Guildford, and at Wisley services in Ripley, successfully applied to Guildford Borough Council to build the development at Runfold Farm in Grange Road. The Shell petrol station is open 24 hours a day and is located between Aldershot and Farnham, en-route to Guildford. There was only one car in front of me as I approached the clearly marked drive-thru and nothing behind, so I was able to leisurely make my meal choice at the telecom stand. The pictured menu featured a range of summer specials so I caved in and went for the peanut butter cup frappuccino with whipped cream. - while you’re checking them out.” While he hasn’t been sent to any major incidents yet, Matondo, who now works for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, has had his share of high drama. “I’ve had difficult jobs that were time critical and where the patients were really unwell. But even though there’s pressure that comes with that, I find myself thinking, ‘This is what I signed up for.’” One emergency he will never forget was a man who had been changing a tractor tyre when it exploded. “The wheel rim had blown off and cracked open his skull. I had to keep him calm while we waited for the Air Ambulance to take him to Leeds Hospital. “I heard later that he had survived, but I still felt like I needed some closure because it was such an extraordinary thing to have dealt with. I had a connection with him in a way, because it was a really significant injury, so I went to visit him afterwards in intensive care. “It feels great to be part of the NHS – it’s a huge organisation but we continuously put patients at the heart of everything we do.” 3 year fuLL time degree (part time also available) £5,000 toWARDS your univerSity degree ENGLISh extra funds of up to available £3,000 Subject to eLigibiLity To JoininG THe find out more about nHs Go to The Starbucks drive-thru is now open for business NHSCAREERS PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReade +1 604 278 4604 .
