The scheme was designed to boost the struggling economy and encourage people to start getting back to normal after lockdown restrictio­ns across the UK were eased. The deal enabled people to get 50% off their meal, Mondays to Wednesdays throughout August, with the government offering a maximum discount of up to £10 per person. More than 80,000 establishm­ents reportedly signed up to the original scheme, with the most recent figures showing 64 million discounted meals had been served in the first three weeks alone. Some pubs, restaurant­s and chains have been so impressed with the return of customers that they have decided to extend the scheme into September – by funding it themselves. The enchanting eatery, part of Oakman Inns, replaced the former Loch Fyne fish restaurant in Downing Street, tucked away from the town’s main retail strip. The stylish gastro pub in the leafy and affluent village of Cobham says it uses fresh seasonal produce, from the best local suppliers, and produces it all in-house, with its very own butchery and smokehouse.
