The scheme was designed to boost the struggling economy and encourage people to start getting back to normal after lockdown restrictions across the UK were eased. The deal enabled people to get 50% off their meal, Mondays to Wednesdays throughout August, with the government offering a maximum discount of up to £10 per person. More than 80,000 establishments reportedly signed up to the original scheme, with the most recent figures showing 64 million discounted meals had been served in the first three weeks alone. Some pubs, restaurants and chains have been so impressed with the return of customers that they have decided to extend the scheme into September – by funding it themselves.
