However, during its explosive final reckoning, that film opened the door to a new generation of mutants in the X-Men universe. Josh Boone’s long delayed rites-of-passage drama slams the door shut again. Filmed more than three years ago, The New Mutants draws inspiratio­n from superpower­ed Marvel Comics characters who embark on adventures separate from Professor Xavier’s other gifted youngsters. Alas, there is nothing remarkable about Boone’s film, which taps into the adolescent angst of his previous picture, The Fault In Our Stars, and channels those raging hormones into a hoary horror set in an abandoned hospital. As a lumbering tale of things that go bump in the night, The New Mutants delivers only fitful shivers including a prolonged encounter with eyeless demons dubbed the Smiley Men, whose design suggests an unholy alliance between the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth and alien archvillai­n Venom. A tidal wave of digital effects blights an overblown final act, drowning out solid performanc­es from an ensemble cast of bright young FORMED in 2012, South Korean boy band BTS (right) have steadily conquered the global music scene after they became the first K-pop act to debut an album at the top of the Billboard charts with the LP Love Yourself: Tear. More recently, band members J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, RM, Suga and V broke records when the video for the single Dynamite was viewed almost 100 million times on YouTube in the first 24 hours after release. To capitalise on the group’s success, Park Jun-soo’s documentar­y follows BTS during the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself world tour. The film incorporat­es live performanc­es and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, offering a glimpse into life on the road for the charismati­c seven-strong outfit. THE LADY IN THE PORTRAIT (15) Preview NEW AND UNIMPROVED FORBIDDEN desire threatens to scandalise the 18th century imperial court of China in director Charles de Meaux’s drama. The Qianlong Emperor (Huang Jue) rules with an iron fist, waging war from his headquarte­rs where he surrounds himself with concubines and wives. Jesuit priest and artist Jean-Denis Attiret (Melvil Poupaud) is one of the few outsiders who can venture safely within the palace walls. He is forcibly commission­ed by the emperor to paint a portrait of the Empress Ulanara (Fan Bingbing, pictured). The young bride’s sittings with Jean-Denis are closely observed by the emperor’s spies. As the empress spends more time with the painter, powerful feelings surface for Jean-Denis, which cascade on to the canvas from his brush. Cheyenne Native American teenager Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt) is the sole survivor of a ferocious level-five tornado which tears through her tribe’s reservatio­n. She wakes in hospital under the care of Dr Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga), who reveals that 16-year-old Dani is on the cusp of discoverin­g her ‘mutant’ powers. Reyes firmly encourages her patient to follow a routine of one-to-one sessions and group therapy to control her psionic energy. Dani is introduced to the doctor’s other charges: miner’s son Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), who explodes with unstoppabl­e energy; devoutly Catholic shrinking violet Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), who metamorpho­ses into a wolf; handsome Brazilian rich kid Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga), who becomes a fireball when he loses control of his emotions, and Russian troublemak­er Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her dragon sock puppet Lockheed. Under close supervisio­n, tempers flare and secrets bubble to the surface, compelling Dani to question the sincerity of Dr Reyes’ actions. The New Mutants was intended as the opening salvo of a trilogy and establishe­s loose narrative tethers to X-Men mythology (Illyana is the sister of Colossus in Deadpool, and the evil corporatio­n behind the hospital program is a clear nod to Logan). Judged on its own meagre merits, Boone’s picture works most effectivel­y as a snapshot of teenage sexual awakening, emboldened by sweet performanc­es from Hunt and Williams. Once characters’ superpower­s are noisily invoked, on-screen action passes in one ear and out the other without firing brain synapses or registerin­g any pleasing memories. Preview MOTHER knows best in a serpentine crime thriller directed by Yang Ye-che, which is set in 1980s Taiwan in the years following the rule of controvers­ial president Chiang Kai-shek and his Chinese Nationalis­t Party. Resourcefu­l widow Madame Tang (Kara Wai, pictured) is determined to secure her family’s future with false promises and cunning schemes designed to unseat her rivals. Eldest daughter Ning (Wu Ke-xi) is a willing accomplice to the skuldugger­y but has been corrupted beyond repair by her mother’s underhand dealings. Consequent­ly, Madame Tang lavishes the most time on her youngest child, Chen (Vicky Chen), who is ripe for moulding into a rosy-cheeked weapon of destructio­n. The matriarch’s plans are threatened when a car accident handily eliminates one of the Tang family’s enemies. A police investigat­ion led by officer Liao (Jun Fu) threatens to expose the tangled web of corruption. Stephane (Damien Bonnard) joins the Anti-Crime Squad to be closer to his young son. He is assigned to shadow experience­d duo Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga), who bend the law to get the results for their chief. During his first day, Romany circus ringmaster Zorro (Raymond Lopez) threatens violence against The Mayor unless a stolen lion cub is returned within 24 hours. When the police apprehend the thief, a boy called Issa, fraught exchanges between Chris, Gwada and Stephane and a baying mob of stonethrow­ing adolescent­s are captured on a drone camera. Les Miserables is ambitious in scope, zig-zagging between feuding factions of a broken Parisian society. Opening with jubilant scenes in the capital as France beat Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 Fifa World Cup final, the film momentaril­y unites desperate characters to THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY... a daughter (Elle Fanning) cares for her ailing father (Javier Bardem) in THE ROADS NOT TAKEN... swells of La Marseillai­se. The national anthem’s chorus implores men, women and children to march against tyranny. French writerdire­ctor Ladj Ly bides his and a boy becomes a gang’s violent enforcer in the New Zealand crime thriller SAVAGE.
