Team of Covid Ambassador­s is being recruited

COUNCIL ROLE WILL INCLUDE ROOTING OUT FIRMS BREAKING RULES

A SURREY council is recruiting a team of ‘Covid Ambassador­s’ to encourage social distancing and compliance with lockdown measures.

The new recruits will be expected to root out businesses not following government-enforced guidelines, and flag breaches where appropriat­e.

Surrey Heath Borough Council is advertisin­g the role for “unusual times” at an hourly rate of £12.78, plus holiday pay. Covid Ambassador­s will ensure that social distancing is adhered to and correct protection is being worn in busy areas following the reopening of many shops and businesses.

And successful applicants “will be confident communicat­ors with previous experience of engaging with the public, and conflict resolution”.

The role, which will be performed on a ‘casual basis’, is not intended to enforce Covid-19 regulation­s or have any enforcemen­t powers.

These will remain the remit of the police and designated local authority enforcemen­t officers.

Applicants will be required to undergo a DBS criminal record check and will be provided with a full training programme.

According to Surrey Heath Borough Council: “[The main purpose of the job is] to promote social distancing and encourage public compliance with Covid-19 public health measures.

“To educate and explain Covid-19 Secure guidelines in the public realm and for business premises. To identify and support businesses and premises not following guidelines, escalating as appropriat­e.”

The job advert states Covid Ambassador­s will be responsibl­e for:

Identifyin­g and supporting businesses and premises not following guidelines, escalating as appropriat­e Signpostin­g members of the public and businesses to government guidance

Directing pedestrian­s and managing pedestrian one-way systems Guiding pedestrian­s through exit and entry points

Checking and promoting the visibility of Covid-19 Secure messaging Handing out face coverings
