Club members enjoy final fling
INTRA-CLUB EVENTS HELD BEFORE NEW LOCKDOWN
IT was a bittersweet weekend for Camberley RFC last week as they are set to close their doors for the next four weeks.
The club hosted their second Intra-Club Ready4Rugby tournament on Saturday, with luck on their side as the clouds parted when the players from across all the sections arrived for an afternoon of sport.
Teams were combined of U15s, academy and senior men and women players, plus parent and coaches teams.
Following the announcement from the RFU on Thursday that adult competitive leagues – Level Three and below for men, and Level Two and below for women – have been cancelled for the 2020-21 season, Saturday run-outs may become a more frequent event.
The action from the pitches later spilled into the clubhouse as Camberley opened its doors to the fully refurbished building for the first time this season, showing all three Six Nations matches.
The younger members of the club were treated to their own Halloween Intra Ready4Rugby festival on Sunday. Coaches were in fancy dress and medals and goodie bags were only a part of the festival organised by the Kids First section led by chairman Jay Wilcox.
England and Saracens’ Bryony Cleall joined in the fun, gave out medals, signed autographs and shared her experience as an elite rugby player.
Due to an injury she was not available for England selection for the final fixture of the Six Nations in Italy but her twin sister Poppy, along with Camberley original Alex Matthews, lifted the Champions Cup and celebrated the Red Roses’ 15th Women’s Six Nations and Grand Slam.
Although the club are now closing their doors for the next four weeks, Camberley RFC is a community club and their coaches will be getting creative to keep players connected until they are able to step back onto the pitch.
