Spurs find progress in cup too Tuff

-

FLEET Spurs produced a credible performance, but were knocked out of the FA Cup 3-2 away to Step 5 side Tuffley Rovers.

A slow start soon sped up as after 25 minutes The Poets took the lead. Warren Mann’s low cross from the left ran loose, and Fleet centre-back Conor Allison deflected the ball past Aaron Bufton for the opening goal.

Rovers then started their best spell of the game, making slick attacks through swift and accurate passing.

It was no surprise when in the last minute of the half Dom Kent took the ball from a rather lackadaisical Fleet defence, made a fine run down the right wing and crossed low for Joe Shutt to tap home from close range and double Tuffley’s lead.

The message the Spurs management team transmitted to their team during the interval had a remarkably quick effect, as they reduced the arrears less than a minute after the restart.

After pressing hard, Tom White, returning to captain the team, nipped in to score.

Spurs were now at least holding their own, although Tuffley were dangerous on the break and in the 71st minute came the crucial moment of the game.

Shutt’s corner was perfectly placed for home skipper Jacob Geddes to score with a powerful header.

Fleet seemed to be roused by the goal and they tore into the Step 5 club with immense determination.

Their efforts were rewarded in the third minute of stoppage time when White doubled his tally after a goalmouth scramble.

A minute later the skipper almost produced an equaliser but was unable to get sufficient power into his shot as the hosts just about held on to their advantage and came through a nervy afternoon.
