Relentless Cam exploit extra man in 11-try rout

-

FREE-SCORING Camberley ran in 11 tries in a 63-14 rout of Horsham.

Camberley kicked off and when the Horsham defensive clearance was run back at them by Ash Wright and Oyoni Gbla, Camberley were soon in the red zone.

From a scrum the hosts were awarded a penalty which Matt Smart dabbed into the corner, and the resulting lineout catch and drive saw Camberley claim the first points of the afternoon with only five minutes on the clock.

The Horsham restart told the story of the game when they actually reclaimed their own kick on the Camberley 10-metre line, but the subsequent phases saw them driven back at every stage, and in desperation they eventually decided to kick as they had lost so much ground.

Camberley almost added to their score when Gbla was clean through only to be brought back for an offside call, and the next play saw the Horsham captain shown a red card following him joining a ruck.

The hosts then launched a series of attacks with Adam Musa and then

Shawa Rai held up just short, and following a very physical charge by Greg Franzel, Musa went over in the corner for another unconverted try on 20 minutes.

The restart saw Camberley kick deep and a great chase saw Ben Lovell Smith strip a Horsham player and a couple of passes saw Jaid Wiltshire charge through to touch down for an excellent converted try.

The bonus point try came five minutes later when Dom Sammut made ground after powering through several challenges but the final pass to score was adjudged to have been forward. A huge drive at the resultant scrum saw Chris Bird pick up at the base of the scrum to cross the line only for play to be pulled back. Again, a strike against the head saw Bird claim Camberley’s bonus point.

Camberley were soon on the attack in the second half, and from a catch and drive Nick Barry claimed another try.

Shortly after a catch and drive produced the same outcome when Barry got his second.

With 10 and five minutes remaining, Horsham claimed two converted tries and with that had the outside possibility of securing a try bonus point.

However, from the restart Lovell Smith stripped a Horsham player and when the ball was moved to Harry Faukner he broke and was able to draw the last defender before putting Gbla through.

Barry switched positions to No. 8 and the next score was not long in coming when Gbla made a great break before passing to Wright to dot down.

That was not the end of the scoring as an exquisite break saw Faukner display his silky running and pace as he carved his way through a faltering defence for a great individual try with two minutes remaining.

Camberley decided they wanted more and, straight from the restart, they started to move the ball towards the Horsham half and Rai with Lovell Smith, who had been absolutely outstanding, suddenly shook the play up. From the middle of the pitch, Rai’s speed and choice of line saw him make 50 metres without scarcely a defensive hand laid on him to score.

With Horsham out on their feet the restart was collected cleanly in the Camberley 22 and after quick hands Wright make good ground before releasing Musa for the winger/hooker to outpace the Horsham side and dot down.

With Smart adding the extras, a final tally of 11 tries ensured a welldeserved and professional performance which maintained Camberley’s place in the race for promotion.
