Golfers club together for hospice cause

-

SUPPORTERS of a hospice care charity in Farnham have raised £14,500 during a fundraising golf day to go towards helping people with an advanced or terminal illness.

In total, 23 teams took part in the event at Hankley Common Golf Club on September 29 to raise money for Phyllis Tuckwell.

A shotgun start signalled the beginning of the 18 holes, which included men’s and ladies’ nearest the pin and longest drive competitions, and ended with a two-course meal for all.

Fiona Chapman, events fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell, said: “Our thanks go to Hankley Common Golf Club for once again hosting this very popular event which helps us raise important funds for our care.

“We would also like to say a big thank you to H2i Insurance and TaxAntics, who sponsored the event, and to both Kebur garden maintenance and Savills, for each sponsoring a hole on the course.

“We are also very grateful to the Rotary Club of Farnham for their help in organising the event, the Inner Wheel of Farnham for arranging the tombola and all of the companies who so generously donated prizes for our auction.”

Phyllis Tuckwell supports more than 250 patients, their relatives and carers who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer, every day, but as the NHS and government usually only covers about 20% of its costs, it has to raise more than £25,000 a day to do this.

The £14,500 raised at the golf day could cover the cost of one of its hospice care at home nurses for more than five months. These specialist nurses visit patients who have chosen to spend their last days, and to die in the comfort of their own homes, providing compassionate nursing care and emotional support.
