Grieving family wants people to seek shocking dash-cam film

-

A CAMBERLEY white van man attempted to overtake a vehicle before ploughing into the front of an oncoming car.

Brian Hunt, 78, died after the collision in which the van smashed into his Honda Civic.

The Ford Transit van, driven by Aron Hicks, had already overtaken one vehicle on the A417 between the junction of Half Penny Lane and Aston Tirrold before making its way back onto the correct side of the road.

But Hicks attempted another overtake as he approached the brow of a hill.

Unable to see what was coming in the other direction, he didn’t spot Mr

Hunt in his green car. Hicks suffered minor injuries in the subsequent crash but Mr Hunt was taken to hospital where he later died.

Hicks, 28, of Mytchett Road, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Oxford Crown Court.

He has been jailed for three years and four months and banned from driving for three years and eight months.

Senior investigating officer Sergeant Dom Mahon, from Thames Valley Police, said: “At the families’ wishes, we are releasing the footage of the fatal decision that Hicks made that day. Hicks was in a hurry that morning and decided to take a dangerous chance, which tragically cost Brian Hunt his life.

“Hicks’ reckless actions have torn a family apart and will have lifelong consequences for everybody who has been touched by this avoidable tragedy. The shocking dash-cam recording of this incident demonstrates very clearly how impatience behind the wheel can be fatal.

“My thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Hunt, who have shown tremendous patience and resolve while we investigated this tragic incident.”
