IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR

“I vow to you, Adolf Hitler, as führer and chancellor of the german reich, loyalty and bravery,” declare SS troops at their annual midnight swearing-in ceremony. They are stood outside the Feldherrnhalle in Munich, the former Bavarian Defence ministry. The Nazis tried to storm it to seize power on 9 November 1923. Ten years later, hitler turned the site into a memorial to the 16 Nazis shot by police during the so-called Beer Hall Putsch.
