The rove

A rack of spools situated about half way along the machine contained roving – long and narrow bundles of fibre, or unspun cotton. One end of each roving passed between two clasping horizontal bars of wood before being extended and attached to an opposite spindle. The fundamenta­l idea was that the thread would be spun from the rovings to the spindles.
