Its longer-barrelled (and thus higher velocity) 88mm (3.46 inch) KWK 43 cannon could penetrate five inches of armour at ranges of at least 2.6 kilometres (1.2 miles), which was more than enough to take most Allied tanks, with the Sherman and Soviet T-34 boasting two inches between them.
