The knights either did not receive or chose to ignore Philip’s orders. They thundered up the long slope towards the enemy lines with the sun in their eyes. This rash manoeuvre saw them riding over their own crossbowmen, whom they treated with contempt as low-born, foot-slogging career soldiers. The impetus of the knights’ charge was thus impeded by their own men.
