The Imo incident 1882

Having forced the retirement of his father, King Gojong begins a programme of rapid modernisation with Japanese aid. Korean soldiers protest against this with a mutiny and riot in the capital Hanseong. Government officials are killed and buildings destroyed before the uprising is quelled.
