Voted by you: the greatest space images
The results are in! See which of our shots of the universe made our final list
Space has continuously amazed everyone with its ever-changing scenery and medley of assorted celestial objects, and we have given our readers the opportunity to decide which image of our elusive universe reigns supreme. Now that the votes are in, can reveal your favourites. We wouldn’t have any of these fantastic images without the current capabilities of telescopes, which have improved exponentially in the last quarter of a century. This is complimented by the continuous development of space and groundbased observatories. To think we have gone
from the Apollo astronauts taking a truly humbling photograph with a mediocre 70-millimetre camera in 1972, to NASA and the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Hubble Space Telescope producing stunning images of the universe every year with its 2.4-metre (7.9-foot) primary mirror.
It’s not just Hubble that’s been hard at work though, as there is a network of worldwide and interplanetary observatories that have provided us with jawdropping, heavenly and captivating pictures. There have also been wonderful images sent back to
Earth from the pioneering spacecrafts – such as
Juno, Cassini and New Horizons. Which one will prevail as the greatest space image of all time though? Let’s begin the countdown!
