Why flowers beat veg and a new school for gardeners
IF newspapers are to be believed, Britain is again digging for victory, with gardens being turned over to grow-your-own.
But new research begs to differ, claiming that most households see their garden as a place to relax, socialise and grow flowers.
Over 2,000 people were interviewed and nearly two thirds (61 per cent) said they use their garden for fun – barbecues and entertaining, instead of growing food.
Home-grown
Over half (55 per cent) said they prioritised growing flowers over putting homegrown food on their plates.
The research, by herb product maker Ricola, found that Londoners let the way with grow-your-own: 37 per cent grow veg, 27 per cent cultivate fruit and 34 per cent grow herbs to cook with.
One in 10 residents in the capital have an allotment plot while 28 per cent said they grow edible crops in window boxes as they do not have any other space to garden.
