What worked well for plant food in years past
1
Any plant foods that are high in nitrogen, like chicken manure pellets, are the equivalent of rain; encouraging lush green growth.
2
Avoid watering salads with borage extracts; they can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage and cancer.
3
Similarly with animal manures water diluted solutions onto the soil and avoid splashes up on to edible leaves and fruits.
