Any plant foods that are high in nitrogen, like chicken manure pellets, are the equivalent of rain; encouragin­g lush green growth.

Avoid watering salads with borage extracts; they can contain pyrrolizid­ine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage and cancer.

Similarly with animal manures water diluted solutions onto the soil and avoid splashes up on to edible leaves and fruits.
