Shoot, root, flower and fruit

WHEN looking at a plant to determine its needs, remember the maxim ‘NPK=shoot, root, flower and fruit’. For foliage plants and leafy veg crops strong choose a nitrogen-rich feed (N) such as Sulphate of Ammonia. For root establishm­ent look for high phosphorus feeds (K), bonemeal remains a great choice. For big flowers and lots of fruit look for high potassium feeds (P) such as Tomorite or Phostrogen Patio Plant Food. Look at the back of fertiliser packets to see what the NPK ratios are – Westland’s products have a particular­ly easy guide to follow (pictured above).
