Jasmine oil is extracted from the starry flowers of this beloved climber, and used by aromathera­pists to boost confidence and sensuality. A deciduous climber, it will cover a sunny wall and fill the garden with scent at dusk.

‘Jacques Cartier’

This is a relative of the Damask rose grown in Bulgaria for the rose oil that aromathera­pists use to mend broken hearts. Unlike its cousin, this variety is repeat flowering and compact.

‘Mrs Sinkins’

The delicious clove scent of pinks has powerful therapeuti­c properties. Carnation oil is said to bring comfort to shy, sensitive souls. ‘Mrs Sinkins’ is an old highly perfumed variety.

Cistus ladanifer

The musky, balsamic leaves of this rock rose are used in perfumery and have a powerful grounding effect on the emotions. This evergreen shrub has large white flowers in summer. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil.

‘Attar of Roses’

Geranium oil is extracted from the rich aromatic leaves of the pelargoniu­m. Known as the ‘Mother oil’, it is said to provide comfort to those who lack support. Pink flowers from April to September.

Helichrysu­m italicum

The curry plant has fragrant evergreen silver-grey foliage, which exudes a spicy scent on warm days. In aromathera­py, helichrysu­m is used for acceptance. Bright yellow flowers in summer.
