Saving seeds
It’s a fun and satisfying thing to do
A red campion I planted last spring somehow managed to flower right through last summer, continue through winter and only started to fade a few weeks ago.
Admittedly, it is in a sheltered area of the garden, but still, 12 months of flowering is pretty impressive!
I made sure I saved some of its seeds before cutting it back. I will either sow them next spring or this autumn, so they start to germinate and get established before winter, or next spring.
Red campion is a hardy perennial that looks wonderful in borders, at the base of hedges and in wildflower lawns. It flowers in a variety of shades of pink – there is also a white version – and appears as the bluebells fade, usually lasting through June and July.
