9 Dahlias for the border

-

‘Labyrinth’

This decorative dahlia is a cracker, with loosely arranged wavy petals that give it a slightly shaggy appearance. The large flower heads in soft tones of peach mixed with hot pink shouldn’t work – but they do! H: 40in (1m).

‘Karma Serena’

Some white dahlias discolour easily in wet weather, but thankfully not this one. Bred for the cut-flower trade, Serena stands up well to rain. A decorative type, those curved petals are greenish-yellow in the centre. H: 3ft (90cm).

‘Henriette’

The spiky flowers of this cactus type come in a pretty pale-apricot that darkens in the middle. Straight stems make it a good choice for cutting, and it lasts well once picked. H: 4ft (1.2m).

‘Linda’s Baby’

A ball dahlia with tightly packed, rolled petals in soft salmon-pink with hints of cream. This particularly free-flowering cultivar has sturdy, weather-resilient stems and makes an excellent cut flower. H: 32in (80cm).

‘Verrone’s Obsidian’

This recent introduction has velvety single petals that are almost black, rolled in on themselves, and surrounding a cluster of golden yellow stamens. Good for insects, it makes a great partner for grasses. H: 2ft (60cm).

‘City of Leiden’

An exuberant choice, combining spiky cactus-type blooms in vivid coral-pink with bronze-green foliage. Compact enough for the front of the border, or in pots on a sunny patio. H: 2ft (60cm).

‘Edge of Joy’

Two-tone petals – white with brushstroke-like magenta markings – make for an impressive flower. Loosely held, they create an open centre that allows insects easy access to pollen and nectar. H: 3ft (90cm).

‘Downham Royal’

Another ball-type, this time featuring sumptuous flowers made up of claretcoloured velvety petals with hints of purple. It combines equally well with other rich, deep colours or with more subtle pastel tones. H: 40in (1m).

‘Eveline’

Decorative with white petals blushed lilac-pink at the tips and in the centre, giving a romantic feel. Another good cut flower. Plant in the middle or towards the back of the border. H: 40in (1m).
