An hour’s work for 15lb 4oz barbel

-

SIXTY minutes on a southern river was all Iain McDonald needed to tempt his biggest barbel of the season in the form of this 15lb 4oz specimen.

After being dropped off at the waterway by a friend, the Canterbury, Kent angler headed straight to a spot he had been regularly feeding with pellets and broken boilies in the hope that the resident barbel would be on the feed.

Just an hour after casting a hair-rigged Bait Co. 3B boilie into his swim, Iain’s rod was wrapping round as the huge fish thoroughly tested his 10lb flourocarbon hooklength and size 10 Drennan hook as it tore off downstream.

A delighted Iain told Angling Times: “I had been baiting the spot for a few days whenever I visited the river, and luckily few people ever fish it, so the barbel must have felt safe there. I never expected to hook one as quickly as that, though.”
