Makins Fishery
Thousands attracted to one of the nation’s very first commercials
HE prolific Makins complex has long been a popular haunt for thousands of anglers and is considered to be one of the very first commercial fisheries ever created. Each of its phases is tailor made with different anglers in mind – so, no matter what style or method you follow, you’re sure to have a memorable session wherever you fish.
Each phase performs well throughout the year, however there are a few high flyers that are currently producing excellent mixed nets of fish.
The pick of the bunch on Phase One has to be Lake Five thanks to the option of having an island and plenty of open water. The feeder dominates more than any other method – with the pegs reaching the island arguably the best here.
Groundbait with corn and pellet in cold weather will account for a lot of carp to 20lb, as well as big tench and bream when the carp fail to feed.
Phase Two has a lot to offer in terms of features, with a host of bays and islands to test your skills.
One lake in particular though, is the Crater pool, which has some of the biggest stillwater barbel stocked. Fish to 12lb commonly come out on worm to those fishing the pole down the edge on peg 1. Even when the barbel fail to show there are plenty of carp to 10lb present. The bomb and pellet to one of the islands is another key tactic to use on this water.
Finally, the Anchor lake on Phase Three is a favourite with many anglers, as not a single carp is stocked – making it an ideal place to catch a haul of quality silvers. Some 30lb of barbel, roach, skimmers and big perch to 2lb are commonplace throughout the year to those who can fish tight to the island shallow with maggot and caster, or down the track at 8m with corn skins and 4mm pellets.
