Chub on a pole?

-

I FISH a small river that holds lots of chub under farbank cover. Would a pole be too light to get them out?

Fred Worrall, Daventry

THAT depends on the size of the chub and how many snags there are.

Smaller fish of around 2lb with few refuges are just right for the pole if you use a heavy elastic and carp-style hooks and lines. You’ll still need to pile the pressure on and get the chub smartly to the surface, though.

Rod-and-line fishing will see your precision suffer but allow you to cover more of the swim and land bigger fish.

It’s ideal if you plan on roving, whereas a pole limits you to fishing just one swim at a time.
