Bread: Big chub can’t resist a big chunk of flake or floating crust at this time of year.

Small bait dropper: This will allow accurate feeding into gaps in the weed and ensure your bait stays on the bottom and is not washed away downstream.

Backleads: In clear conditions these allow you to lay your line on the deck to keep it out of view of wily chub and barbel.

SSG shot: These should be in every river angler’s box. Use them to create link leger rigs for chub or put one straight on the line for rolling meat when barbel fishing.

Small bag or rucksack: Keeping mobile is sometimes the only way to catch on rivers at this time of year. A small carryall will accommodate all your essential items while you search out swims.

Bait apron : A really handy item to have when standing out in the river, as you can feed without the need for a bait waiter or platform.
