Shrewsbury Severn back on top form

-

R SEVERN, SHREWSBURY, SHROPSHIRE

NOT too long ago the River Severn at Shrewsbury was devoid of fish. How times have changed!

Today the river is alive with numerous species and the fishing was so good in a recent Riverfest Qualifier that competitors landed doublefigure bags of roach, with individual fish to 1lb.

You can enjoy the same sport for the price of a day ticket from Shropshire Federation of Anglers. The town stretches are worth fishing but one of the best areas is by Frankwell Car Park. These swims vary in

depth from 3ft down to 20ft so a variety of methods have to be used to consistently catch the roach, dace and chub.

To keep control of your float in moving water, long rods of 15ft-plus are ideal using either a waggler, stick or Bolo set-up.

Feeding balls of groundbait and slowly trotting maggots over the top is a tactic that usually brings the better stamp of fish. It’s worth taking a range of baits, as worm or bread will pick out the perch and chub, while a big pellet will find barbel to well over 10lb. These fish have also been hooked and landed on gear intended for roach with maggot hookbaits.
