TOP 5 TIPS
Early in the pike season, when the water is still relatively warm, don’t neglect the shallows – even 2ft of water is enough to hold a big pike.
Understand the depth and weed situation in front of you and pick a lure accordingly, not just your favourite. The vane on the front will dictate the depth to which it dives.
I do best with dull coloured lures that rely on creating a strong silhouette. I will only use coloured versions when the water is coloured.
Rubber jig-style baits are great, but useless in weed. They work best bounced across the bottom.
A peaked cap and a pair of polarised glasses are essential to spot any follows. And don’t forget the life jacket – no pike is worth risking your life for.
