DEEP WATER OR SHALLOW?

Swims between 8ft and 12ft deep are best once the water temperatur­e is down to low single figures. Avoid swims which aren’t moving, though, unless the river is very coloured – in which case they might be a good option. If the colour is good and you can see your loosefeed between 6ins and a foot into it, go for swims which are moving steadily and approach them with bulk-shotted rigs in the form of Bolos or Avons.
