Swims be­tween 8ft and 12ft deep are best once the wa­ter tem­per­a­ture is down to low sin­gle fig­ures. Avoid swims which aren’t mov­ing, though, un­less the river is very coloured – in which case they might be a good op­tion. If the colour is good and you can see your loose­feed be­tween 6ins and a foot into it, go for swims which are mov­ing steadily and ap­proach them with bulk-shot­ted rigs in the form of Bo­los or Avons.
