COMMERCIAL match fisheries are becoming the go-to venues for specimen perch.

With few predators and even fewer anglers to specifically target them, the species has become more and more abundant in waters where the main quarry is typically carp.

One such fishery in Shropshire has become so renowned for its perch sport it has attracted the attentions of some of the country’s top specimen anglers, all keen on landing the resident four-pounders. Woodside Fishery’s four lakes all hold carp and silvers, but when the cold weather hits it’s the perch which really come alive.

As part of this week’s perch fishing special we have put together a detailed insight into the fishery’s best hotspots to give you every chance of landing a personal best.

CHARLIES POOL All the lakes hold perch like this one. (15 PEGS) PERCH HOTSPOT PERCH HOTSPOT There are few features on this heavily-stocked pool, which holds big numbers of carp and ornamental fish. However, some of the venue’s biggest stripeys can be found here. Try the corner peg on the barn side, which has produced them to 4lb+. LILY PADS HOUSE POOL (10 PEGS) PERCH HOTSPOT Underrated for its perch fishing, this lake does hold the species, and some big examples have turned up in nets of silverfish. This is a brilliant pond for lots of bites, as it holds a huge head of silvers which can make for a great day’s fishing in winter.
