EA to thank for barbel boom

NOW it’s been establishe­d that a previous record barbel came from a stocking by the EA’s Calverton Fish Farm, I wonder how many other barbel records came from there too? I would guess that every barbel river has had similar augmentati­ons of stock from Calverton.

The case of the Trent is interestin­g. Calverton’s main man, Alan Henshaw, told me that their brood stock is captured from a Trent backwater, stripped of eggs and milt and returned to the river. Once developed, over 60 percent of the fry are placed back in the Trent. So all those anglers now loving their East Midlands ‘Berties’ owe Calverton a massive debt of gratitude.
