PAUL’S BOMB RIG

-

BOMB rigs are relatively simple things, and Paul’s is no exception.

Mainline is 8lb Daiwa Tournament ST to a 12ins hooklink of 0.19mm Guru N-Gauge and a size 12 QM1 hook fitted with a bait band.

However, Paul likes to leave around 5mm of gap between the bend of the hook and the band so that the hookbait doesn’t interfere with hook penetration.

The lead is 0.75oz square model, which is plenty big enough to cast around 25m. According to Paul, this is the maximum distance that you can ping out pellets with a catapult and achieve any accuracy.

However, he may go up to a 1oz lead in really windy weather. He doesn’t clip up, preferring to cast by eye. “Once I’ve got my eye in I’m sorted,” he grinned.

“I also don’t run the bomb on the mainline. Instead, I fish a Guru Lead Clip to create a semi-fixed set-up that’s perfectly safe if I should crack off on a fish.

“I won’t tighten the quivertip up either. I find that a slack line stops carp bolting off when they brush into the line. Too tight a tip and a line bite will move the lead away from the feed but the fish will also feel the tension across their body and swim off at high speed!”

“I’m a great believer in using on the hook what I’m feeding. Carp love pellets!”
