IF YOU’RE looking for a no-nonsense, go-anywhere rig for bottom baits and wafters this spring, look no further than the German Rig. It’s a set-up that has found favour with many big-carp anglers both in the UK and abroad in recent seasons, and it’s easy to see why. It’s super-simple to tie, hardly ever tangles and is an awesome hooker that big carp really struggle to deal with because of the inclusion of a small swivel on the hook shank, making the hookbait hard to eject once picked up.

There is nothing stopping you from going slightly against the grain and using it with other hookbaits, such as balanced ‘stacks’ of rubber corn or even large drilled pellets or bunches of maggots. In fact, just about the only thing it’s not suitable for is pop-ups!

The ‘German’ is also a highly versatile rig. It can be used with just about any form of lead set-up, although helicopter or lead-clip arrangemen­ts are the most popular choices among its regular users.

This versatilit­y extends to the type of hooklink that can be used with the rig. Although it is most commonly tied using a coated braid hooklink, with none of the coating removed or any stripped-back sections near the hook, it can also be used with straight mono.
