WHARFE BARBEL ON A £4 DAY TICKET!

RECOMMENDED RIVER WHARFE, BOSTON SPA, WEST YORKSHIRE

-

THE rivers have started with a bang in Yorkshire this season, and none more so than the Wharfe. Chub and barbel anglers report some great sport in the low water conditions.

The dreamy stretch at Boston Spa, with its overhanging trees, bends, eddies and shallow runs, is perfect for a day’s roving.

Along with most river species that swim, the Wharfe is also home to some monster barbel. A 15lb 8oz fish was landed a couple of years back and there are plenty of smaller ones to be had too.

The conditions will determine which tactics will work best – at this time of year the river is often low and clear, and that can mean a typical pellet feeder approach may spook the fish.

It may be worth fishing a lead with a PVA bag of free offerings, particularly when fishing close to or under overhanging trees or shallow runs. Feeding a few swims and staying mobile is a good plan to adopt and an easier way of locating the fish if you don’t know the stretch.

Floatfishing is also productive here, even for the barbel.

Find a nice run and feed caster and hemp over the top, but expect bites from chub, eels, perch, roach and dace unless you fish with a large hookbait.

The good news is that you can fish some sections on a day ticket through Boston Spa Angling Club, so you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy yourself.
