MANY anglers were chasing big chub and barbel on the opening day of the river season, but not Jack Whitelock.

He decided instead to trot maggots for silver fish – and hooked this pristine 3lb perch!

The 22-year-old from Dewsbury floatfished a shallow stretch of the River Calder at Mirfield, and told Angling Times: “I caught the perch within the first hour after a run of small roach and dace. When it first struck I thought I was snagged.”
