Tactics behind the week’s best fish
...and follows capture of a surface 41 the week before
RESH from catching a 41lb 12oz mirror off the surface on his first session on a new water, James Salmons returned to take a new lake record at 52lb 4oz.
The mighty mirror, known as the Pig, is the Cambridgeshire syndicate water’s first-ever 50-pounder and was up in weight by more than 5lb since her last capture in the spring.
“On my first session on the new lake I had a surface pb of 41lb 12oz, along with a couple of twenties off the bottom,” James told Carpfeed.
“I arrived for my second session the following week to find a fairly busy lake and, as a result, I spent the first night in an area I didn’t fancy all that much.”
The next day, the Chub-backed angler found some fish in one corner of the lake and jumped into a nearby swim after it was vacated in the afternoon. “The rods went out nicely an hour before dark and I sat back in a much more confident mood than the previous evening.
“At around midnight I had a big liner on one rod, so I hoped something was happening, and a few hours later the alarm let out a succession of bleeps.
“I lifted the rod to be greeted
A pig of a fish – all 52lb 4oz of it for James.
