DERSINGHAM BACK ON TOP AS THEY STORM TO VICTORY IN SUPERCUP

Norfolk side repeat their 2015 win at Barston

-

AFTER failing to defend their Bait-Tech Supercup title last year, Norfolk club Dersingham AC surged back with a vengeance to be crowned champs for 2017.

In a super performance on an autumnal Barston Lakes they scored 31 points, seven clear of their nearest rivals.

Lifting the famed silver trophy, Dersingham’s scorecard was the epitome of consistency. They recorded a section win, a second, two fourths and an eighth, carrying one bad score to take the title. AJ Tackle, from Leeds, came second with 38 points on a section win countback as Middlesex side Harefield Tackle, matched their points score.

The Main and Match Lakes at the Solihull fishery welcomed the 15 finalists to do battle on a grey and windy day, but sport was impressive for early October – 50lb was needed to win every section and some massive weights led the individual frame.

Dersingham and AJ had the lion’s share of joy there too, as AJ skipper Damien Beggs won the match with 174-12-0 off redhot peg 124 on the Main Lake. Dersingham’s James Collison took second with 155-6-0 from the peg next door.

“We decided to fish the Guru Festival at Barston in July to get a good idea of the venue so that if we got through to the final, we’d have a head start.

“That outing told us that although the pole would work for skimmers, there were so many big carp and F1s to catch that the feeder would be a better bet,” James said.

“The pole would play a part on the harder pegs, but we felt happy as a team with the Main Lake. The only worry may have been the Match Pool, which can produce big points on a bad draw.

“In fairness, though, our draw was a good one. Only Matt Bunting on Match Pool peg 7 had a tough one on paper, although peg 88 on the Main Lake proved to be a banana skin too. James Wilkinson struggled on there, but otherwise we had good pegs and got good scores off them,” he continued.

“We went to fish a long-range bomb and PVA pellet bag attack plus a shorter 30m Method feeder line. We’d found that early and late were the best times for the feeder, the bag coming into play mid-match when things went quiet and the fish backed off a bit – and that’s more or less how things worked out.”

Casting the bag as far as they could throw it, with pink or orange wafter hookbaits, Dersingham used pellets and crushed Cell boilies in the bag. On the Method it was micro pellets and crushed boilies with wafter hookbaits, catapulting 8mm pellets over the top.

“Martin Allen did well on the pole to come fourth in his section, catching on corn over

hemp at 13m while on the Match Pool, Matt knew he was fishing for sixth or seventh in section from his peg.

“Eighth was still a good result as he caught small F1s on pellet fished to the island and down the edge,” James added.

“We totted our points up to 31 and felt it may have been a little too high to win. In 2015 we scored 29 points. We felt we’d got in the top three, but to win was a surprise. Still, it was quite a high-scoring match in the end.”

Team result: 1 Dersingham AC, 31pts; 2 AJ Tackle, 38 (two section wins); 3 Harefield Tackle, 38 (one section win); 4 Trafford Tackle, 40 (one section win); 5 Stoke MG, 40 (0 section wins); 6 Whitemoor Lakes, 46; 7 Oakham Hookers, 47; 8 Team Martin, 48; 9 Bottisham DAC, 50 (section countback); 10 Westlands AC, 50; 11 Broad Oak AC, 53; 12 Stainforth Angling, 54 (section countback); 13 Carp Shop, 54; 14 Alliance & Leicester Liverpool, 62; 15 Beaufort Four, 68.
