1 Know your tides and learn how the species you want to catch behave in relation to them.

2 Be flexible. The fish will move a lot in a day and a bay that’s empty one minute can become full of fish. So travel light and search for your quarry.

3 Avoid busy periods like the middle of the day. Pleasure sailors in particular can make your life hell.

4 For thick-lipped mullet, bread is the best bait I have used. Feed it in a liquidised form to attract fish.

5 Bass have catholic tastes but a bloody mackerel head with the guts hanging out often produces the biggest fish.
